After serving as an Ordeal member for at least six months and fulfilling specific requirements, a member of the Order of the Arrow becomes eligible to participate in the Brotherhood ceremony. This ceremony is a pivotal step that signifies a transition from initial involvement to full membership in Scouting’s national honor society. The Brotherhood ceremony is not merely a ritual—it deepens the member's commitment to the principles of Scouting and the Order of the Arrow, including selfless service, cheerful devotion, and leadership in both community and personal life.
Achieving Brotherhood membership is a recognition of a member's continued dedication to the Order's mission. It reflects a deliberate choice to further embody its ideals, such as promoting a spirit of giving and supporting others. Brotherhood members are expected to take on greater responsibility in guiding and mentoring newer members, helping to sustain the Order's traditions, and contributing to its legacy of service and leadership.
This stage of membership also strengthens the sense of unity among members. By reaffirming their dedication to the principles of the Order, Brotherhood members foster a closer bond with their fellow Arrowmen and deepen their understanding of the values that the Order seeks to promote. It marks not only personal growth but also your commitment to the OA.
The Brotherhood Walk is an important step in your journey within the Order of the Arrow, signifying your commitment to the ideals of Scouting and the OA.
Brotherhood Walks are available at some Lodge events, but they are primarily conducted at your Chapter meetings and events.
Check with your Chapter leadership to find out when the next Brotherhood Walk is scheduled.
To complete your Brotherhood Walk, you will typically need:
A basic understanding of OA principles and traditions
Memorization of the Obligation, Song, Admonition, Sign, and Handclasp
Participation in a reflection on your OA experience
Your current BSA and Lodge dues must be paid
To help you prepare, review the OA Song, which you can find here:
